FAQs Related to Beyond Boston Leased Housing
Applications and Deposits:
Q: How do I apply and secure my spot in the leased housing?
A: Students must first meet with a representative from Off Campus Housing and Support Services individually, or attend a Beyond Boston Housing Workshop to learn more about the process for securing housing in a leased property location. Once you have met with someone from OCHSS or attended a housing workshop, you can fill out the leased housing application for your desired leased property location. Please note that you must have your co-op or Semester-In start and end dates near-finalized prior to filling out the leased housing application. Following the application, you will submit a $200 deposit for each term (Fall, Spring, Summer I, or Summer II) you’d like to secure housing for. This will ensure your leased housing reservation is held. Closer to your move-in date, you will receive move-in instructions via email. Please note that space is available in the leased properties on a first-come, first-served basis.
Q: How do I submit my deposit for the leased housing?
A: The deposit is $200 per term you will be living in the housing, so most co-op students are paying $400 as their deposit. That deposit will count towards the entire balance for housing. To submit the deposit, students should visit MyNortheastern, click on “Services & Links,” followed by “Student Financial Services,” then “Student Account, Payment and E-bill Information.” Once here, click “Make a Payment through NUPAY.” Students should then choose the appropriate housing deposit option based on their desired term(s) and locations.
Q: How does billing work?
A: You will be billed for Beyond Boston housing directly to your student account, in a similar manner to university housing or tuition. Bills appear directly on your account about one to three weeks before the start of the term. See a helpful table below for a billing timeline:
Bill Term | Months of Term | When will the bill appear on my account? |
Summer II | July and August | Mid to late June |
Fall | September – December | Mid to late August |
Spring | January – April | Mid to late December |
Summer I | May and June | Mid to late April |
If you have a partial stay within the above terms, you will be billed on a weekly basis. Weekly rates can be found within the Prices and Info by City sections for your specific city.
Q: Can I transfer my on-campus housing deposit to a Beyond Boston Housing deposit?
A: Unfortunately, no. All Beyond Boston Housing deposits must be made through NUPAY. Your on-campus housing deposits will be refunded once you cancel with University Housing (by emailing housing@northeastern.edu).
Q: Okay, I applied and submitted my deposit for leased housing. What happens next?
A: You’re all booked for the housing! The next communication from us will be a cancellation deadline reminder (about 2 months prior to the start of the term), a move-in date confirmation form (shortly after the cancellation deadline), and official move in instructions (about one month prior to the start of the term).
Q: What happens if I place a deposit, but the housing was already full?
A: This likely wouldn’t happen. OCHSS will be clear about availability in the leased housing and inform you if we’re full before you submit a deposit. However, in the even that you placed a deposit when the housing is full, you will be refunded. OCHSS can then advise you in the process of finding housing elsewhere.
Q: What happens if the housing if full, but I wanted a spot in the leased housing? Is there a waitlist?
A: OCHSS does not advertise how many spots are open for the leased housing given it can tend to fill fairly quickly and change daily. It will be clear how many spots are left once you attend a Beyond Boston Workshop or meet with a representative from OCHSS about leased housing, or you can always email offcampus@northeastern.edu. If the housing is full, still submit your leased housing application. This will ensure you save your spot on the waitlist should there be any cancellations. We’ll then inform you about any cancellations in the order that you applied for the housing. If the housing remains full and you’re unable to secure a spot in the housing, OCHSS can advise you in the process of finding housing elsewhere.
Cancellations
Q: If I decide not to live in the Beyond Boston Housing I applied for do I still have to pay for the room?
A: You must cancel your housing in writing (via email to offcampus@northeastern.edu) with OCHSS at least 45 days prior to the official start date of the co-op term to avoid paying any housing fees. For the Spring/Summer I term, this date is November 15th. If you cancel in writing by the deadline, your deposit will be refunded as a credit on your student account. After the cancellation deadline, you forfeit your deposit, and the entire amount for the housing will be charged to your student account. See below for exceptions.
Q: If my co-op gets cancelled and I’m no longer moving to a leased housing location, do I still have to pay for the housing?
A: No. If your co-op gets cancelled by your co-op employer, you will not need to pay for the housing, even if you cancel after the cancellation deadline. However, you will need to provide proof that your co-op has been cancelled from your employer or your co-op advisor to OCHSS. Once you provide this proof, you will not be charged for the housing and your deposit will be refunded.
Q: If my co-op gets moved to a remote format due to COVID-19 , will I still be charged in full for the housing?
A: If your co-op is moved to a remote format due to COVID-19 and you’re unable to physically move in at the beginning of your original co-op start date, you will need to provide written proof to OCHSS that your co-op has been moved to a remote format, or that your co-op employer is allowing a remote format, which can be in the form of an email or letter from your co-op advisor or co-op employer. Once you provide that proof, you will not be charged for the weeks that you are not living in the leased housing (whether it is for the entirety of your co-op, or partially). You will be prorated on a weekly basis based on when you can physically move-in (per guidance from your employer and the university). However, your deposit will not be refunded in full if you are unable to physically move in at all.
Q: If my employer and the university is allowing me to work in-person at my beyond Boston co-op, but I personally choose to instead work from home or to not follow through with my co-op due to COVID-19, will I still be charged in full for the housing?
A: If both your employer and the university are allowing you to work in-person and move to your beyond Boston leased housing location, you will be held to the cancellation deadline (45 days prior to the start of your co-op term). Cancellations that occur after the cancellation deadline for reasons other than co-op postponement, cancellation, or the co-op moving to a remote format, will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Depending on circumstances, we cannot guarantee that there will be no financial penalty for such cancellations.
Move-in and Move-out:
Q: When can I move in, and if my co-op starts early, can I move in early?
A: The move-in date varies by term, but the earliest move-in date will be clear to you once you attend a Beyond Boston Housing Workshop or meet with a member of OCHSS. Move-in dates are determined based on the official co-op start and end dates, which are determined by Employer Engagement and Career Design. Normally, students should not plan on being able to move in early given the cohort of students who are living in the leased housing in the prior term. It is the student’s responsibility to find and pay for temporary housing if their co-op begins early or they would like to move in early.
Q: When do I have to move out by? If my co-op gets extended, can I extend by stay?
A: The move-out date varies by term, but the move-out date will be clear to you mid-way through the co-op term. Move-out dates are determined based on the official co-op start and end dates, which are determined by Employer Engagement and Career Design. Normally, students should not plan on being able to extend their stay and move out late given the cohort of students who will be moving in for the following co-op term. It is the student’s responsibility to find and pay for temporary housing if their co-op is extended. In rare circumstances, OCHSS may be able to extend the student’s stay in the leased housing, but this depends on availability and demand of housing for the following co-op term, and students should not count on this being an option for them.
